10 Webcomic Recommendations

Authors need to read. It's a necessity of writing. While books are the best option for authors, you also need to take some hints from other mediums. Like movies, TV shows and video games.

Also, webcomics. I haven't read many physical comics, but I've tasted tonnes of webcomics. There's a goldmine on Webtoon, but you can also find some individual sites that hold absolute gems.

So here's a list of webcomics I love.

Let's get to!

10 Webcomic Recs

1. The Silver Eye by Laura Hollingsworth

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Fantasy Action-Adventure

Official Description: Two rival royal families are always at odds. The conflict reaches a point where one child king, Apen, sacrifices himself and his country to prevent another war. This leads to some disastrous consequences. The story follows his journey to try to set things right, and if he’s going to do so, he has to work alongside members of his rival family.

Words can't express how much I love this comic. It's the first one I've ever read and boy is it a ride. It began in 2009, so you can see the difference between the beginning and the latest updates. It has only gotten better since. Look, bacon bouquet!

A boy in a purple trench coat holds strips of bacon wrapped in a tissue out. It resembles a bouquet of bacon. He asks, "May I have this dance?"

If that doesn't sell your heart, I don't know what will. Go read this one right now. Okay, after reading this post. But right after that.

2. Siren's Lament by instantmiso

Status: Complete
Genre: Fantasy Romance

Official Description: Content with her ordinary life, Lyra is somewhat of a wallflower. However, her comfortable lifestyle suddenly goes astray when she accidentally plunges into the world of sirens. Entangled in a curse, Lyra will learn that her world may be a lot bigger than she had ever imagined.

I never expected to enjoy a story like this, but I was hooked. I felt like I had to push through the beginning, but it's worth it. From one huge point in the story, I couldn't stop scrolling. By the end of the first season, I was starving for more.

3. Beyond The Western Deep by Alex Kain and Rachel Bennet

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Fantasy

Official Description: “Prior to the Four Kingdoms, there was naught but chaos…” When a ruthless warlord sets out to free his people from generations of oppression, a chain of events begins to unfurl that could thrust the known world into endless conflict. A small peace envoy is gathered to stem the tide of war, but a darkness looms before them--an evil that lurks far beyond the forests of the Western Deep.

It's like a mix of Redwall vibes and Wheel of Time politics. And I love it. The cast is interesting and I'm fully intrigued. I actually own physical copies, so that's a plus! It's currently three chapters long, but it's jam packed with wholesome character moments and action.

4. Sugar and Spies by Paige Keeper

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Action Comedy

Official Description: Sugar and spies and cold-blooded lies: that's what this story is made of. Just kidding--it's pretty lighthearted. Follow the adventures of three teenage secret agents as they navigate the perilous worlds of terrorist factions, corrupt dictators, and high school drama--all before curfew.

It's light hearted and brimming with humour. What's more, there's a spinoff series with behind the scenes of the characters! More fun and games! It follows an episodic structure where we see our main girl trio go from yapping poodles to the ultimate power group. Watch them bond over what any average teenage girl does at sleepovers: exchange scar stories!

5. Closely Knit by Mariana DiMercurio

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Fantasy

Official Description: Josephine, or "Jo", is an 70-year-old woman living a quiet life until one day she is tasked as the new champion and sent on a quest to save the kingdom. Along the way, she meets a small creature named Roy, whose own goals seem to align with Jo's. They come across many obstacles and challenges, but soon realize that sticking together may be the only way to help the kingdom, and each other.

Are you sick of angsty teenage protagonists? Jo is everything but that. I love her grandmotherly nature in a fantasy quest type adventure. Don't worry, there's still a whole lot of sass. The story takes popular tropes and subverts them. Highly recommend it!

6. The Legend of Ruach by Paige Coffer

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Fantasy

So far, there's only one chapter available. A description is pending, but it looks like it's about a superpowered girl on the run from a crazy king. It's promising. Can't wait for the future updates!

7. The Boy And The Moon by arvie

Status: Complete
Genre: Romance Fantasy

Official Description: Mayari, 1 of the 7 sisters of the moon, is curious about life beneath the clouds. One night, she decides to visit a boy she often sees walking under the moonlight.

This short, heartwarming story can be binged right now. It's a stellar concept. I wish it had more substance to it. I felt it was too short for what it was trying to convey. But it's still enjoyable and a definite check it out!

8. Kids Are All Right by HP56

Status: Complete
Genre: Drama

Official Description: This story tells you the value and importance of family; it will also remind you of the happiness and sadness, joys and sorrows of childhood.

I have two words. MY HEART. The art is simple. The story is simple. The characters are simple. But that's why this webcomic is amazing. It tackles hard topics from the eyes of a kid. From this fresh perspective, it encourages you to think about your own life and issues. I rarely experience such strong attachment to characters, but I love the kids here so much.

9. War Not Love by Valeria Galarza vals

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Romance Comedy

Official Description: War not Love. Julia, empress of the Kingdom of dreams, and Roman, emperor of the Kingdom of nightmares. They were the long-awaited symbols of peace. With the union of both, the war between the two kingdoms would end, someday, somehow, or that was the idea that everyone believed…AH HA HA HA! dreamers...

It has a strange, almost juvenile sense of humour. We're still in the early stages yet, and the characters are not exactly role models. But that's why I'm looking forward to hopefully a lot of character growth! The art style is wonderful. I'm looking forward to what's going to happen!

10. Dr Frost by JongBeom Lee

Status: Incomplete
Genre: Mystery

Official Description: College professor by day, and bartender by night, psychologist Dr. Frost believes in one simple belief. Humans are all the same. He uses this tenet to guide his practice, and solves the puzzles of the human mind one by one.

This is one of the first Webtoons I've read. I love psychology, and this story has a lot of it. It begins like a standard crime plot structure, but it is so much more. It's informational, but thrilling. It's like the Sherlock Holmes of counselling.

That was ten webcomic recommendations! I haven't read many complete comics, but I have read at least a chapter of too many to count. With the ones that have sparked my interest, I have read as much as I can. Looking back at this list, I'm starting to realise a pattern in my tastes of genre.

Next month, I'll be giving ten musical recommendations. Until next week, happy authoring!

Have you read any of these comics? What are your thoughts? Did you like or dislike the plot, characters, etc? Do you have any other recommendations? Do you have a favourite webcomic?
